The project aimed to retrofit a custom designed bookcase that would offer storage solutions while complementing the apartment with a stylish new custom designed furniture.

Before & After

New York City apartments often lack storage, but there are plenty of creative solutions that can make life much more pleasant when subject to living in a tiny apartment. Below is a before and after photograph that demonstrates how good design can vastly improve living space.

Design Details

Valchromat Wood

Valchromat® is an innovative product that combines the natural features of wood with the brightness of color and, because of its unique flexibility, combines the beauty of textures and the best of engineering.

Valchromat is not MDF. It is an evolution of the MDF.

Sliding Door

Including a sliding door would make enter and exit the bathroom much more seamless, but due to the minimal amount of space available, include a sliding door was not such a simple task. Some of the main challenge included sourcing a thin track and hardware that would suit the extra thin (3/4 inch) Valchromat wood panel.

Retractible Cinema

The client does not watch a lot of TV, but does enjoy a good movie on the big screen. Olbos Studio proposed to incorporate a retractible projector screen in the overhead storage compartment that could easily be tucked away once the movie is over.

Storage Box

In small New York City apartments extra storage comes at a high value. The storage box allows for extra storage space for the client’s tiny 400 square foot apartment.
